Croydon Community School’s Commitment to Reconciliation

Croydon Community School is grateful for the privilege that our school stands on Wurundjeri land. Our flags are a symbol of our respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  They are a commitment as a school to Reconciliation and are a reminder of our First Nations people’s history which pre-dates colonisation, and of the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their land, culture, families, and identity.

At the start of the school year, Croydon Community School holds a smoking ceremony lead by Indigenous elders to welcome in the new school year and show our acknowledgment and respect for all Indigenous people, and as a symbol of cleansing the spirit for all of us. It is important because it reminds us to always be respectful of this land and country. It reminds us that while we are one nation, our country has a very rich history that goes beyond the past two hundred years.

We have a Marrung team at school that supports our Indigenous students with opportunities for further learning. Croydon Community School provides multiple opportunities to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. We participate in both local and national Indigenous events such as Reconciliation week and NAIDOC  week, as well as through strengthening our relationship with Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place.
